Vista FTP network sharing

Here's the setup:
Vista is on the P4 machine with the (Motorola) cable modem. 64-bit FIC machine is on a wired gigabit network with Vista.
I can 'see' both systems in workgroup on either machine.
While
newsgroups, email, net all work fine with Firebird or IE6 or IE7 the FIC machine WILL NOT work with FTP, either in Firebird, the IEs,or with WS_FTP, Cute FTP, Core FTP, Smart FTP. Error messages vary depending on application but it seems the connect is made, then after a wait 'no response from server' is the result.
With the Vista machine FTP works with IE7 and Core FTP just fine, I assume the other FTP clients would work as well.
Network center shows Vista sharing local network and internet while FIC shows local network only. This seems a bit stupid since I can access the internet, just can't use FTP from other PCs on the network.
Any suggestions?
Many Thanks, TE, ret.

Basically same issue. I cannot FTP to any of my hosts. I usually just ftp via browser but IE7 says I'm not connected to the internet. :-/ (how am I typing this?) Tried several FTP client, as you indicated, error varries depending on client. Tha only program I can get to access my host is Dreamweaver8.
